Fundraising Connections
Other Considerations
The fundraiser will have to look at other factors about your agency or
organization which could affect the outcome of how much money can be raised.
- Who supports you? Organizations which are controversial may have
better luck with direct mail or personal solicitations than with reqesting
donations from corporate or government sources.
- What is your core funding? What funds can you count on annually?
- What other fundraising have you done in the community? Constant
appeals to the public don't work, they can be a real turn off.
- What fundraising project should you decide to do. Try to choose a
variety of projects.... if some are "fun" so much the better. Put
yourself in your prospective donor's shoes....would you be interested?
- Volunteers to help with fundraising. Can you count on having
volunteers to help with the fundraising? Or will you need to develop a
volunteer committee.
Being Realistic
Most corporate funding is allocated year by year, with about a one year
budget planning timeline. It is much easier for a large institution like a
hospital, or university to raise money, than for a small community group. So
don't compare apples with oranges, talk to another similar group in a different
city or town, to determine what would be a realistic amount for a fundraiser to
be able to raise for your organization. The more controversial your
organization, the greater degree of difficulty for the fundraiser. Can you
imagine an anti seal hunting group raising money in a coastal town in
Newfoundland or Labrador?
Should you hire a Fundraiser for your Group?
- do you have already have someone who can do the fundraising in your
organization?
- a self starter....a highly motivated person who understands your
organization, is a skilled communicator, excellent writer....personable, and is
well connected to local service clubs and business, and comfortable in different
settings.
- Fundraisers are usually paid a percentage of monies raised , so choose
wisely and check references, some slick dudes can talk the talk....but don't
produce results.
