What Does Being Internet Ready Really Mean?

Being Internet ready means having an open standards-based communications infrastructure, client architecture, web server architecture, database gateway and security architecture.

The key to the success of the Internet success was/is adherence to open standards. How strict one is with the standards is driven by the business needs. For example, developers who implement concepts found in draft standards may have to revise their code frequently to accommodate changes to the standard. However, since it takes many months to possibly approve standards, some organizations are motivated to deploy applications based on evolving standards when the benefits outweigh the risks and subsequent costs. The best advice is to be fully cognizant of the current and emerging standards. Moreover, since standards are usually set or directed by market leaders, know your product vendors strengths and weaknesses, and look at evolving/devolving vendor alliances and partnerships.
