Did you know...

It is World Cup Soccer time and here are some "tidbits" about this awesome sport that you may not know. I know I didn't until I did some research.

Where did soccer originate? It is believed that the first recorded soccer game took place on a Shrove Tuesday in Derby, England, as part of a festival to celebrate the victory of English soldiers over Roman troops ( a.d. 217). By 1175 the annual Shrove Tuesday soccer game was a regular event.

Why is soccer called soccer in North America and elsewhere is know as football? This sport was originally known as football in England, at least until the advent of rugby (a variant of soccer/football) which led to some confusion of names. The London Football Association was formed in 1863 to promote the game that emphasized only the kicking of the ball. The game soon became known as association football to distinguish it from rugby. Eventually it became known as football or soccer. The name soccer actually comes from the second syllable of the word association. The name soccer was adopted in North America to differentiate the sport from other forms of football played in the U.S. and Canada.

Ever wonder...

With all the hoopla of "Seinfeld" ending its mega-successful run in the television sitcom world, and the huge amount of advertising dollars the show has been able to demand for ad time during its much anticipated final show, I thought I would find out a bit about the history of advertising.

Although advertising is essentially a twentieth-century development, the first formal advertisement in Canada took place much earlier. This first advertisement was an offer of butter for sale that appeared in 1752 in an official government publication, The Halifax Gazette. This ad proved to only be the beginning.

By 1889 newspapers were carrying enough advertising to prompt Anson McKim to open an office in Montreal where he would arrange the placement of advertising in Ontario newspapers. Mr. McKim created an entirely new type of business, Canada's first ad agency!!

Interesting...
